“Together We Stand” is a promise, a message and bringing hope. A brief sentence that can turn individuals into a community. “Together We Stand” means becoming active, being visible, and taking a stand. When Italian-born artist Marinella Senatore (*1977) calls on people to take part in her actions in public spaces, it is about experiencing solidarity and empowerment. Groups or individuals of all ages are invited, but those who are often overlooked or have to fight for recognition are particularly welcome. Since 2012 more than seven million people worldwide have come together peacefully by participating in her School of Narrative Dance.
Senatore is an activist, lecturer, and one of the most important representatives of young, global movements committed to social change. Trained in visual arts, orchestral music, and film directing, she develops collaborative processes as a diverse togetherness. Her workshops and parades, her film project Nui Simu / That's Us (2010) with mine workers in Sicily, the opera Rosas (2012), which involved over twenty thousand participants in several countries, or her free radio station Estman Radio (2014-18) are large-scale projects of a collective creation.
The exhibition presents a comprehensive view of Senatore's work, which she develops out of her projects: graphic, sculptural, film and installation works refer to diverse places and events where people stand up for themselves or gather together for joy. They celebrate dancing, singing, making music, and movement in a nod to centuries-old practices, symbolizing solidarity without old doctrines. Senatore’s drawings, collages, films, banners, and light installations are presented in exhibitions around the world. They are offering past projects a renewed publicity and giving local initiatives global visibility.
The exhibition is accompanied by a magazine in German and English, featuring many illustrations and a detailed interview with the artist. The show will also be accompanied by a wide-ranging program.
